Benedictine 5, Anderson 1

Benedictine scored 3 runs in the first inning and got an outstanding pitching performance from Brian Manering in upsetting Anderson in Game 1 of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional baseball tournament on Thursday at Littick Field on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

Benedictine advances to the winners bracket final at 3 p.m. on Friday, while Anderson will play in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Kevin Ryan led off the game with a walk, Ryan Buchanan singled through the left side and Aaron Giza walked to load the bases. Eric Lovitsch followed with a single to right to score Ryan, then Jared Shamblin grounded into a double play, with Buchanan scoring on the play. Brian Nelson then grounded to Anderson shortstop Aaron Woolsey, but Woolsey's throw to first base was high, allowing Giza to score and Nelson to reach second.

Benedictine added a run in the fourth when Shamblin led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Nelson, took third on a grounder by Aaron Altenburg on which Raven second baseman John Buckner made a spectacular diving stop, and scored on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, Manering was shutting down the potent Raven offense. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before Buckner lined a one-out single in the fourth that barely eluded a dive by Benedictine shortstop Scott Weber.

Anderson, which had one hit in the first 6 innings, finally got to Manering in the seventh. Buckner led off with a single and, two outs later, Brandon Dillon singled up the middle to send Buckner to second and Adam Bollier followed with a single to left that scored Buckner.

But the Eagles got that run back in the top of the eighth on one-out walks to Buchanan and Giza and a two-out single by Shamblin.

Manering worked the complete game for Benedictine, allowing 6 hits and striking out 7 while walking none.

Kevin Nichols went the distance for Anderson on the mound, also allowing 6 hits but walking 5 and striking out 5.

Buchanan and Eric Lovitsch had 2 hits apiece for Benedictine, while Buckner finished with 3 hits for Anderson.
