Anderson 7, Hope 5

May 16, 2003

[ Travis Davis ]Travis Davis' leadoff homer in the eighth inning broke a 5-5 tie and put Anderson ahead to stay, and Greg Cauble struck out 9 during a complete-game pitching performance that helped the Ravens defeat Hope in Game 3 of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Friday at Littick Field on the Ohio Wesleyan campus in Delaware, Ohio.

Anderson will play in the losers bracket final at 11 a.m. on Saturday, while Hope finishes its season with a record of 20-17.

The Ravens took a 1-0 lead in the second when Adam Bollier singled with one out, and one out later, moved to second on a walk to Duke Behr. Kyle Rayl followed with a single to left center, to score Bollier.

Hope hit Cauble hard in the bottom of the second, taking the lead on a leadoff single by Eric MacKenzie and Kyle Blackport's home run to straightaway center. After Casey Glass was retired on a liner to left, Jon Edmonson reached on an infield single and scored on Kenny Papes' double off the top of the centerfield fence for a 3-1 lead.

[ Kenny Bart ]Hope pitcher Kenny Bart helped keep the score at 3-1 by picking off a pair of Raven base runners in the third, but surrendered a solo homer to Brandon Dillon in the fourth as Anderson pulled to within 3-2.

The Flying Dutchmen got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Papes reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on Nate Grinzinger's bunt single and scored when Anderson centerfielder Dillon could not come up with the catch on Kyle Trapp's fly ball.

Anderson closed to within 4-3 in the fifth. Bart picked off his third runner of the game, erasing Aaron Woolsey after a leadoff walk, but after Brent Hodges singled to center, Bart was called for a balk, sending Hodges to second, and Hodges scored on Troy Loyd's single to left center, but Hope's Blackport plated B.J. Maas with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to
restore the 2-run lead.

Rayl tied the game with a 2-run homer to left in the sixth, and Davis' leadoff homer in the eighth put Anderson ahead, 6-5, and spelled the end of the day for Bart.

Meanwhile, Cauble seemed to strengthen as the game progressed. He fanned 2 straight Hope batters to end the sixth inning, and after the Flying Dutchmen had loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, came back to strike out 2 more batters to leave the sacks full.

Anderson added an insurance run in the ninth on Rayl's double and a throwing error by Hope third baseman Trapp on Woolsey's sacrifice bunt attempt.

Cauble allowed 10 hits and 5 runs, of which 3 were earned. He struck out 9 and walked one.

Bart was charged with the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 6 runs over the first 7-plus innings.

Rayl finished with a 3-for-4 day with 3 RBI for the Ravens, and Loyd, Davis and Adam Bollier each had 2 hits.

Blackport drove in 3 runs for Hope, and Grinzinger and Papes each collected 2 hits.
