WESLEY TAKES FIRST-ROUND LEAD
AT NCAA DIVISION III TOURNAMENT
May 12, 2003
The fact that a member of the Wesley College golf team raced to the top
of the individual standings was no surprise.
What was a surprise was which member of the Wolverines led the way as
Wesley took an 11-stroke lead during the first round of the NCAA Division
III men's golf championships on Monday at Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware,
Ohio.
Anthony Apolostico, the No. 4 golfer for Wolverine coach Rick McCall,
fired a one-under-par 70 to lead all players. Monday's

The
Wolverines also got an excellent round from No. 3 golfer Adam Frank,
who matched Apolostico with a 35 on the front nine and finished with a
73 to rank fourth among individuals.
Chris Noll, last year's NCAA Division III medalist, shot a 74. Zac Oakley
finished with a 75 and Brock Cerklefskie rounded out the Wolverines' first
day with a 79.
Wesley totaled an 8-over-par 292 over the first 18 holes, leaving Gustavus
Adolphus, Averett and Denison tied for second place at 303. Central (Iowa)
was right behind at 304. Redlands was in sixth place with a 306, followed
by St. John's (Minn.) with a 307 and Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Texas-Dallas,
each with a 309.
Oglethorpe, Methodist, Ohio Wesleyan and Trinity finished in a 4-way tie
for 10th place at 310.
Emory
and LaVerne were tied for 14th place at 311, followed by Williams (312),
Guilford (313), Greensboro (314), Allegheny (315), Skidmore (316), Muskingum
(318), Susquehanna (325) and St. Lawrence (329).
Averett's Toni Karjalainen shot an even-par 71 to help the Cougars
to a second-place tie, while Central's Jeff Osby was one-over-par at 72
to help the Dutch to fifth place in the team standings.
Guilford's Dave Patterson, Trinity's Simon Thompson, Gustavus Adolphus'
Luke Benoit and Methodist's Adam Horton also were tied for fourth place
at 73.
The opening round began and ended with light drizzle, but most of the
day was windy and overcast with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees.
Tuesday's second round begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday's
