AVERETT ERASES 11-STROKE DEFICIT TO TIE FOR LEAD
AFTER SECOND ROUND OF NCAA DIVISION III TOURNAMENT
May 13, 2003
As the weather warmed up, so did the performances at the second round
of the NCAA Division III men's golf championships on Tuesday at Dornoch
Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. Tuesday's Results
Janne
Mommo fired an NCAA Division III tournament-record 65 to lead the
way as Averett wiped out an 11-stroke deficit to tie Wesley for the team
lead after 36 holes.
Mommo's performance broke the NCAA Division III tournament record of 66
accomplished 3 times, including twice by Methodist's Mike Adamson in 1996
and 1997. The round of 65 also broke the course record of 67 set by B.J.
Pitzer in 1999.
Incredibly, Mommo's round of 65 included three-putts on holes No. 12 and
No. 16. He shot a 30 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine.
Mommo took over the individual lead with a 2-under-par, 36-hole total
of 140. He leads St. John's Nathan Proshek, who shot a 69 on Tuesday,
by 3 shots, with a pack of 5 golfers that includes Averett teammate Toni
Karjalainen tied for third place at 144.
Wesley's Anthony Apolostico, who fired a one-under-par 70 to lead all
players on Monday, finished with a 77 on Tuesday and is tied for 11th
place among individuals.
Averett's
team total of 291, combined with Wesley's round of 302, left the teams
tied atop the standings at 594.
Central put together a solid round to move into third place, four shots
behind Averett and Wesley. While the Dutch did not have a golfer break
70, they did have 4 scores of 75 or less to finish with a 294 on Tuesday.
Denison
moved into fourth place at 601 despite taking a two-stroke penalty for
having a coach directly behind a player at the tee. Craig Eckerle
led the Big Red, finishing with a 68 to move into a third-place tie among
individuals.
Gustavus Adolphus was in fifth place at 603, followed by Redlands and
Texas-Dallas at 604. Methodist and St. John's (606) and Ohio Wesleyan
(611) rounded out the top 10.
Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Trinity and Williams were tied for 11th place at
612, followed by Muskingum (613), Greensboro (614), Oglethorpe (615),
Emory (617), Guilford (618), Skidmore (621), Allegheny (625), LaVerne
(626), Susquehanna (635) and St. Lawrence (640).
Other
individual performances of note included Redlands' Nick Obie, who
sank a hole-in-one on the par-3, 176-yard hole No. 9; and Muskingum's
Ryan Lescalleet, who turned in one of the day's four sub-70 rounds to
move into a third-place tie among individuals.
Also included in the third-place tie are Trinity's Simon Thompson and
Methodist's Adam Thornton.
Zac Oakley of Wesley and Luke Benoit of Gustavus Adolphus were tied for
eighth place at 145 and Redlands' Jordan Bailey was in 10th place with
a 146.
Wesley's Chris Noll, last year's NCAA Division III medalist, shot a 74
for the second consecutive day and is tied for 13th place at 148.
Tuesday's round was played under sunny skies for most of the day, with
a few clouds rolling in during the late afternoon. Temperatures were in
the mid-60s.
Wednesday's third round begins at 8 a.m.
