WESLEY TAKES LEAD WITH 287, UP BY NINE GOING INTO
FINAL DAY OF NCAA DIVISION III TOURNAMENT
May 14, 2003
Wesley College bounced back from a second-round 302 to post a third-round
287 and take a nine-stroke lead after the third round of the NCAA Division
III men's golf championships on Wednesday at Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware,
Ohio. Wednesday's Results
The Wolverines' lead was far from safe, however, as no fewer than six
other teams were 11 or fewer strokes out of the lead -- exactly the size
of the margin that Wesley had after Monday's first round but saw Averett
erase completely during the second round.
![[ Chris Noll ]](images/wesley-noll.jpg) Leading
the way for Wesley on Thursday were Anthony Apolostico and Chris
Noll, each of whom carded a one-under-par 70. Apolostico was the leader
after Monday's first round, carding a 70 under difficult conditions, while
Noll, the defending NCAA Division III individual champion, turned in his
best round of the 2003 tournament. Zach Oakley contributed a 72 to the
Wolverines' effort.
Averett, which had tied Wesley for the lead after the second round, finished
with a 296 to slip into second place, nine strokes behind.
Janne Mommo followed his second-round NCAA Division III tournament-record
figure of 65 with a 69 on Wednesday, strengthening his grip on the individual
championship, Mommo leads all individuals with a four-under-par total
of 209.
Cougar teammate Toni Karjalainen added a 72 on Wednesday, leaving him
in a fourth-place tie among individuals.
St.
John's made the biggest move during the third round, finishing with a
285 -- the best round of the tournament thus far -- to move into a third-place
tie at 891. Nathan Proshek stood out for the Johnnies, carding
his second consecutive round of 69 to move his three-day total to 212,
three shots behind Mommo in the individual standings.
St.
John's also got a 69 from Sammy Schmitz and a 72 from Kyle Frederickson
to jump from an eighth-place tie to the tie for third.
Gustavus
Adolphus kept pace, finishing with a 288 to move from fifth place into
a tie for third. Neil Johnson led the Gusties with a 69, while Dan Suedbeck
and Jake Sand each recorded a 71.
Denison was the final member of the tie for third place after finishing
with a 292 on Wednesday. Fred Waddell had a 69 for Denison, while Craig
Eckerle finished with a 71 to hold on to third place among individuals.
Perennial
contender Methodist and Redlands stood in a tie for sixth place,
one stroke behind the third-place tie. The Monarchs did not have a sub-70
round on Wednesday but displayed consistency across the lineup, recording
scores of 70-71-72-73 to finish with a 286, the second-best round of the
tournament to date.
Redlands held on to sixth place in a similar fashion, posting scores of
71-71-73-73 to finish with a 288.
Ohio Wesleyan and Central were tied for eighth place at 897, 16 shots
behind Wesley. The Battling Bishops matched Methodist stroke for stroke,
counting scores of 70-71-72-73 to finish with a 286, the second-best round
of the tournament to date. Central shot a 299 on Wednesday to slip from
their third place standing after two rounds.
Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished at 902 to round out the top 10. Oglethorpe
and Muskingum were tied for 11th place at 903, followed by Texas-Dallas
(904), Greensboro (906), Williams (907), Trinity (910), Emory (914), Guilford
(916), Allegheny (925), LaVerne (929), Skidmore (933), Susquehanna (942)
and St. Lawrence (947).

Following Janne Mommo (209), Proshek (212) and Eckerle (215) in
the individual standings were Karjalainen and Methodist's Adam Horton,
who were tied for fourth place at 216.
Jordan Bailey of Redlands and Apolostico and Oakley of Wesley were tied
for sixth place at 217, while Wesley's Noll and Trinity's Simon Thompson
were tied for ninth place at 218.
Other individual performances of note included Trinity's Neil Cohen, who
shot Wednesday's best round -- a three-under-par 68 -- after carding an
80 during each of the first two rounds.
Greensboro's Brandon White was one of six players to finish with
a 69 on Wednesday.
Wednesday's action began a half-hour late because of a frost delay. Most
of the day was sunny, with the temperature peaking at about 70 degrees,
but clouds rolled in in late afternoon and the final teams on the course
finished their rounds under varying degrees of drizzle.
Thursday's final round begins at 8 a.m.
