Kenyon Takes First-Round Lead
at NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships

CANTON -- After 10 events, the Kenyon Lords and Ladies have splashed out to early leads in the 2006 North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.

The Kenyon men's team won 3 of 5 events and earned 6 top-5 finishes on its way to the top of the leaderboard with 508 points. On the women's side, the Ladies reached the wall first in 4 of the day's 5 events, and also turned in a second-place finish in the final event to conclude the first day of competition with 512 1/2 points.

In the men's field, Denison finished the day in second with 429 points, followed by Wabash (251) in third and Wittenberg (198) in fourth. Oberlin (160) was fifth.

The Big Red women also finished second, compiling 421 points. Wooster (205) followed in third, Wittenberg (198) was fourth and Hiram (155) was fifth.

The 200 individual medley was a record-setting event for both men's and women's swimmers. Hiram senior Beth Groselle smashed the women's 200 IM record when she touched the wall in a time of 2:04.65. The time also surpasses the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet. Kenyon senior Andrejs Duda won the men's race in a time of 1:51.36, also establishing a new meet mark and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Division III championships.

The 2006 NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships continue through Saturday evening. Preliminary events start at 10 a.m. both days, while finals begin at 6:30 p.m. Early heats of the 1650 freestyle will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
