Kenyon Leads After Second Day of Action
at NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships

Feb. 10, 2006

CANTON -- For the first time since 2003, the Kenyon women opened the second evening of competition by winning the night's first event, the 200 medley relay. The Ladies then proceeded to turn in 12 top-5 finishes, including two wins, on their way to 1122 points after the second full day of competition at the North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

The Kenyon men retained their hold on first place as well. Five first-place finishes propelled the Lords to a narrow 29-point lead over second-place Denison (1105-1,076).

The Kenyon women jumped to a 118 1/2-point advantage over second-place Denison (1003 1/2). The Big Red claimed three event titles and 8 additional top-5 finishes. Rounding out the women's leaders, Wooster finished the day third with 520 1/2 points, followed by Wittenberg (499) in fourth and Allegheny (472) in fifth.

On the men's side, Wabash was third with 653 1/2 points, with Wooster (503) following in fourth and Wittenberg (481 1/2) in fifth.

Two individuals guaranteed themselves a trip to the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships in Minneapolis with stellar performances in the finals session. Kenyon senior Andrejs Duda touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke (:50.35) en route to his second individual championship of the conference meet. He also won the 200 IM and automatically qualified for the national meet in both events.

Hiram senior Beth Groselle, who yesterday established an NCAC mark in the 200 IM, also claimed her second individual title of the meet, finishing first in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:05.35.

Not to be outdone, the Kenyon women's 800 freestyle team of juniors Becca Allison, Katie Randall, freshman Kara Stiles and senior Rachel Smith combined to win the event with an NCAA "A" time of 7:41.17.

The Allegheny women did their rich diving tradition proud as the Gators swept the top 3 spots in the 3-meter competition. Sophomore Glenna Kramer topped teammates Elysha Cloyd, a freshman, and Frankie Civitarese, a junior, by compiling 341.90 points. Cloyd was second with 339.50 points, followed by Civitarese with 298.05.

Denison sophomore Stephen Julka won the men's one-meter board (421.5) to improve on last winter's third place finish.

The 2006 NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships continue through tomorrow evening. Preliminary events start at 10 a.m., with early heats of the 1650 freestyle will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. The annual Senior Recognition Ceremony is slated for 6:20 p.m. and finals are to begin at 6:30 p.m
